BASF specialty foam in solar collectors from the heating technology company Viessmann

The international heating systems manufacturer Viessmann, Germany, now uses Basotect® to insulate its solar collectors. The light, flame-retardant melamine resin foam produced by BASF is fitted to the side walls and the rear of flat-plate collectors. Flat-plate collectors capture solar radiation and convert it into heat. Basotect shows good insulation properties over a long period, even when exposed to high temperatures. It positively influences the air exchange in the collector at different climatic conditions. And in contrast to conventional insulation materials, the BASF melamine resin foam can be cut into different forms. A Viessmann solar combi-system with Basotect flat-plate collector insulation was pronounced test winner by the German consumer organization “Stiftung Warentest” in March 2009, with a rating of “good”.

“Cold Winter” in Mexico

In recent years, the leaders and citizens of Mexico have become more aware of the need for increased energy efficiency, especially in construction. Consequently, the government of President Calderon has made sustainability in construction a priority of his administration. Consequently, the government in Mexico has enacted legislation that encourages low-income housing developers to meet sustainable criteria in their projects, making “non-green” ones difficult to sell. The government also provides incentives for housing consumers to help them acquire housing in developments built with materials that improve energy efficiency. With a significant shortage of low-income housing in Mexico and the population growing by almost 2 percent per year, pressure to build new energy efficient housing is great. Since 2000, over 600,000 low income houses have been built annually, and the plan is to continue at this rate. Fortunately, access to mortgage credits for a large part of the population, essential for the growth of this sector, has been possible due to the macroeconomic stability achieved during the last decade. You may be thinking: what’s this got to do with NA 2020 Marketing? These market conditions create significant opportunity for BASF in Mexico through use of a comprehensive approach to serve the construction market, especially since no single competitor offers integral solutions to address construction industry needs.

BASF’s Basotect® specialty foam provides a decorative and acoustic insulation in Spanish design hotel

Silence from above BASF’s Basotect® specialty foam provides a decorative and acoustic insulation in Spanish design hotel FLORHAM, PARK, NJ – August 11, 2009 - At the newly built Barceló Raval design hotel in Barcelona, Spain, sound absorbers made from Basotect® specialty foam are improving room acoustics. The lobby of the ten-story, four-star hotel has approximately 2200 ceiling baffles made from BASF's flexible melamine resin foam that help to reduce background noise and ensure optimum audible levels of speech and sound. The low weight of Basotect and the ease of manufacturing different shapes gave the interior designer great freedom of design when it came to the lobby décor. The acoustic baffles of different sizes were produced by the Spanish foam manufacturer Tecno-Spuma, SL, Sant Adrià De Besòs (Barcelona).

Social Responsibility

Smallest ecological footprint belongs to EIFS

BASF Wall Systems today announced the results of an Eco-Efficiency Analysis comparing brick, stucco and Senergy® Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS). The detailed Eco-Efficiency Analysis was performed to determine the balance of environmental burden and life cycle costs associated with the construction, use and disposal of commercial exterior wall claddings in the United States.

High-tech parking lot helps museum 'go green'

They had her at a half million beer bottles. Even before she'd seen the brown sparkle of the Yellowstone Art Museum's crushed glass parking lot, Executive Director Robyn Peterson knew she was going to like it. The high-tech lot, the only one of its kind in the northwestern states, not only drinks up to four inches of rainwater in half an hour, but also filters out oil and other parking lot waste before releasing the moisture into the ground…Kaul said his product, developed with Wisconsin-based Geosystems and chemical company BASF, tackles two environmental problems by using recycled glass and handling storm water. Communities are often hard pressed to find useful ways to use recycled glass.

Sustainable Design: Eco-efficiency of Roofing Insulation Systems

This 1-hour interactive online course explores several popular roofing insulation systems - Expanded polystyrene (EPS), Polyisocyanurate (Polyiso), Extruded polystyrene (XPS), and Sprayed Polyurethane Foam (SPF) - and discusses the influences each one has on sustainable design. It is divided into the following sections: Sustainable Development Insulation Systems Technical Aspects Environmental and Economic Aspects Appendix The course begins with an introduction to sustainable development, compares different plastic insulation systems, then follows up with some technical points on each system. Lastly, eco-efficiency analysis is explained and the environmental and economic aspects of each system are discussed. This course is Registered with the AIA (Reg # RV940, HSW, SD).

Spray Polyurethane Foam Air Barriers

Sustainable design includes the informed selection of materials and products to reduce product-cycle environmental impacts, improve performance, and optimize occupant health and comfort. This course on Spray Polyurethane Foam Barriers lays out the essential information for constructing a superior, cost-effective building enclosure system - that is, the layer of materials that separates the interior environment from the exterior environment in such a way as to avoid creating moisture-related problems. You'll review the four barriers that comprise a weather barrier system, known in the trade as HAMM: Heat Barrier Air Barrier Water Barrier (Liquid Moisture) Vapor Barrier (Gaseous Moisture) By the end of this 2-hour interactive online course, you'll understand the importance and role of an air barrier in the building enclosure system, and see how a spray polyurethane foam barrier compares with the more problematic materials that are also in use.

Concrete Additives: Water-Repellency & Efflorescence Control in Masonry

This one hour interactive online course provides the details of achieving water-repellency and efflorescence control in masonry construction. While the focus is on single-wythe masonry walls, the admixture technologies presented are applicable to other manufactured concrete products, such as pavers and roof tiles. (This course satisfies the AIA Health, Safety and Welfare requirement.)
